  • When did you join Red Gate?

    August 2009

  • What was your first ever job

    My first real job was a software engineer, mainly developing user interfaces using Visual C++/MFC along with a whole load of other crazy technologies that were cutting edge at the time are now dead and buried.

  • Before you arrived at Red Gate what did you do?

    I was the Lead User Experience Architect at AVEVA Solutions Ltd. A big part of this job involved evangelising user experience design to the company and defining an approach for introducing design skills and process to the development projects.

    When I did actually get the chance to design stuff, there were some impressively difficult problems to solve that went something like ‘this product is used to design power stations using 3D modelling…can you make it easy to use?’

  • What does your job involve on a day-to-day basis?

    Drinking coffee, user research, trying to think of innovative product or feature concepts, drinking coffee, designing how our systems behave for the user, scoffing free food, designing user interface detail and evaluating any stage of our designs with users (with some more coffee). Ok, maybe not all of that in one day?

  • What do you like about working in User Experience at Red Gate?

    It’s great to work for a company that prides itself on the design of its products. We have some amazing challenges to work on; our products are fairly complex in terms of the functionality they offer to our users so making them simple to use is never straight-forward.

  • Complete the following sentence: I know everything there is to know about…

    2 a.m., then I wake up and can never remember it all.

  • What’s your favourite book?

    Anything with pretty pictures in it.

  • What super power do you wish you had (or have but aren’t telling anyone because that’s the point of being super)?

    Super strength, mainly because it would make trips to the gym a lot easier.

  • Why did you choose Red Gate?

    I wanted to work for a company that had an established user experience department. When I found out about how Red Gate not only had that but also had such a great attitude towards work, I was pretty much sold.

  • What are your favourite Red Gate perks?

    Ok, so it’s great to get all the free food, days out and other ‘feel good’ events. But realistically, my favourite ‘perk’ of Red Gate is just being trusted to work in any way I think is best.

  • What’s your most memorable Red Gate experience so far?

    The John Lewis VIP shopping trip; this was a complete surprise by the management and was one of those ‘once in a lifetime’ experiences that I’m sure I’ll never forget.

  • What’s your stance on Marmite?

    It doesn’t support my weight.
